The amount of coverage your network provides is of paramount importance. If you can't get a signal, you can't use your phone - simple as that. In fact, contrary to popular belief, if you have no signal from your provider, you won't even be able to connect to a different network in order to make an emergency call. Although the GSM specification requires that emergency calls should be able to be made from phones with no signal or SIM card; in reality, none of the UK networks will accept such calls.
