So, you're all ready to set off on your holiday? Well, before you leave home, take a look at the following reminders to make sure you're fully prepared for your trip:
- Ask a trusted neighbour to come in and collect any post that arrives, or arrange for it to be held at the post office whilst you are away. It will take at least a week to set up this service, so organise well in advance.
- Cancel newspaper, milk and any other deliveries made to your home for the duration of your trip.
- Return any library books, rented videos and DVDs.
- Make sure all your bills are paid and up to date.
- Leave a spare key with a trusted neighbour, and ask them to keep an eye on your house. Give them a copy of your travel plans, and a contact number in case of emergencies.
- Reconfirm your flights and any reservations you have made.
- Store any valuables in a safe place.
- Set up timed security lights to help keep your home safe.
- Turn off your heating. However, if cold weather is forecast while you’re away, it may be advisable to have your central heating come on for a couple of hours each day to prevent pipes freezing and bursting.
- Unplug and switch off any electrical appliances. This will save energy and minimise the risk of electrical fires.
- Empty your fridge of all perishable items, and make sure you have taken out the rubbish.
- Make a final check to ensure that you have everything you need ... tickets, passport, money ...
- Lock all doors and windows.
- Make sure you leave plenty of time to get to the airport. If you’re early you can relax with a coffee or do some shopping before you board your flight.
- Wear comfortable clothes and shoes for your journey. Thin layers are a good idea, as you can then easily adapt to the different temperatures en route.
