Web Hosting
Looking to run a website for your business, organisation or club? Or, just want to host a personal web page? If running your own web server isn't yet an option, you'll want to find a good hosting package. Web Server hosts put your website on the Internet on their remote servers.
- Find an affordable option, but don't compromise on what you need. Check how much bandwidth you're allowed to transfer each month. If your site has downloads, large images, or a huge user base, you'll need a large amount of bandwidth. Small, special interest or club sites won't require nearly as much.
- Find out how you actually transmit your pages to the server. Some hosting companies require use of an FTP client (which takes just a few minutes to learn); others use a web-based administration client.
- Features such as CGI support, Perl support, XML, ASP, etc. all need to be taken into account. If you're serious about running a quality web site, you need to use some of these protocols. E-commerce security, such as SSL, is an absolute must for any business.
- Your site may grow, so plan ahead and get enough web space for your immediate future needs. Web space is charged on a sliding scale, but don't be put off upgrading this. Offer your clients and audience everything they need on your site - compromising on price and quality creates an unprofessional site.
- Ensure that the host is reliable. This point is key. Reputable hosting firms will have near-constant uptime, with warnings before servers are taken down for maintenance.
