Excess

The first portion of a loss. This is a specified amount a policyholder must bear before the insurers pay a claim. For example, if a claim is submitted for £800, and the excess is £100, then the insurance company will pay out £700 (the claim minus the excess). The inclusion of an excess, whether compulsory or voluntary usually lowers the premium.
