There are a number of basic tips that you can follow that will help keep your computer and the information stored on it secure:
- Never open an email attachment unless you are absolutely sure about what it is.
- Install anti-virus software and keep it updated.
- Choose a complex password (alphanumeric, upper and lower case letters, special characters, and a minimum 10 character length)
- If you have an Internet connection, make sure you install a firewall, either directly on your computer using a software firewall, or as a separate device.
- Make sure you regularly check for updates for your chosen operating system. Microsoft Windows provides an update service as part of the software, and as security problems are found and resolved, you can download and install fixes that will help protect your computer.
