Reducing the Risks

Whilst insurance will compensate financially for the loss of a stolen car, there is little that can help with the inconvenience and shock. Following these guidelines will help minimise the risk of having your car stolen or broken into.

Parking your Car

Thieves like working in shadows, so always park in an open, brightly lit area. In a ticket-exit car park, make sure you take the ticket with you; don't ever leave it in the car.

Hide your Property

Never leave valuable property in your car; if you must, then make sure you leave it in a locked boot. If you have a hatchback car, the rear shelf should be in position. Remove anything that might look tempting from view, even if it isn't valuable - thieves may be tempted to break in just in case it is.

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Your insurance policy requires you to take care of your property at all times. If you are careless when leaving your car (such as leaving it unlocked), then any claim for theft may be rejected.

Lock the Car

Always lock your doors and boot; even whilst the car is in your own drive or garage, or if you are just leaving it for a few seconds. Take the keys with you - never leave them in the ignition whilst you dash into your home or whilst you are paying for petrol. It takes seconds for a car thief to take advantage of this opportunity.

Remove Information

Don't leave any car ownership documents (such as your certificate of insurance and registration document) in your vehicle.

Windows and Sunroofs

Have all the windows etched with the registration number of your car. This helps deter car thieves.

Make sure windows and sunroofs are always left firmly shut, even on a hot day. For this reason, you should never leave young children or animals alone in a parked car, as this would lead to a serious risk of suffocation.

Security

Thieves are opportunists, and will often move on to an easier target if they see even a basic level of protection.

Many insurers allow a special premium discount if your car has a professionally-fitted alarm/immobiliser system. Ask your insurer what systems they approve or require.
