What Does Home Contents Insurance Cover?

Home contents insurance in the UK is designed to protect your personal possessions, and anything you would take with you if you were to move. This includes items in your home, outbuildings and even your garden; such as furnishings, furniture, televisions, computer and audio equipment, clothing, frozen food and garden equipment.

This policy will cover loss or damage to your possessions whilst they are in your home from the following risks:

  • accidental damage
  • falling branches, trees or aerials
  • fire, flood or smoke damage
  • subsidence
  • theft
  • water from burst boilers, tanks or pipes

Although you can cover most of your items under a general policy, expensive items such as works of art, jewellery or antiques might need to be separately insured. This is because most contents policies apply a limit to the amount they will pay out for a single item. The policy should allow you to name these items, and pay a higher premium for their inclusion. You could also consider consulting a specialist insurer for these items.

This advice also applies to items such as musical instruments. A specialist insurer may provide more appropriate cover for these items, and you may find that this may also be at a cheaper price.

Many home contents policies also provide liability insurance, which will protect you in the event that anyone injures themselves in your home and makes a claim against you. These claims can be for a considerable amount.
