Reading a Wine Label from Germany

Key:

  1. Knipser: The producer.

  2. 2000: The year the grapes were harvested (the vintage year).

  3. Laumerscheimer Mandelberg: The vineyard location. The grapes are from the Mandelberg vineyard in the village of Laumerscheimer.

  4. Riesling: The grape variety. If no variety is given on a QmP wine, you can assume that it is Riesling.

  5. Trocken: Indicates a dry wine.

  6. Spätlese: A degree of quality within the Qualitätswein mit Prädikat category, meaning that this wine was produced with late-harvested grapes.

  7. Pfalz: The quality region of origin.

  8. Qualitätswein mit Prädikat: Quality level designation. QmP is Germany's highest category.

  9. AP Nr 5 128 029 03 01: The Amtliche Prüfnummer (or AP number) is a code assigned to each individual quality wine cuvee produced by every winemaker in Germany, and confirms that strict legal tests have been completed on this wine.

In this case, the number 5 represents where the wine was tested, 128 the village where the estate is located, 029 represents the grower identification number, 03 the producer's application number, and 01 represents the year the wine was presented for approval, in this case 2001.
