Reading a Wine Label from Italy

Key:

  1. 1999: The year the grapes were harvested (the vintage year).

  2. Barbera d'Asti: Type of wine. This wine is made from 100% Barbera grape variety grown in Asti.

  3. Denominazione di Origine Controllata: Quality designation indicating that grape varieties, yields, vineyard sites and production methods are all regulated. There are approximately 250 DOC zones in Italy, and approximately 700 wines bearing this classification.

  4. Ca' Bianca: The vineyard.
