Reading a Wine Label from the United States

Key:

  1. Geyser Peak: The producer.

  2. Cabernet Sauvignon: The grape variety. To be designated a single varietal, at least 75% of the wine must be Cabernet Sauvignon.

  3. Sonoma County: A general VA (Viticultural Area) recognized by wine law. The Geyser Peak vineyard is specifically located in the VA of Alexander Valley, Sonoma County although the label does not state this.

  4. 1997: The year the grapes were harvested (the vintage year).

  5. Produced and Bottled by Geyser Peak winery: This may alternatively be indicated by 'Estate Bottled'.
