In 1987, with the resurgence of the gaming industry brought on by Nintendo, Atari released the XE Game System (XEGS), an 8-bit home computer and gaming machine. It came complete with a detachable keyboard, lightgun (XG-1), joystick and a few game cartridges. However, poor marketing and a lack of updated models hampered sales and Atari officially dropped all support of their 8-bit line in January 1992.
