The PlayStation Portable uses the Xross Media Bar (XMB) main menu interface, which is also seen in the PLAYSTATION 3, the PSX (DVR) hardware and recent Sony TVs. This interface consists of a horizontal sequence of icons: Settings, Photo, Music, Video, Games and Network, each of which show a vertical sequence of sub-icons when highlighted.
The main menu system may be accessed at any time by pressing the HOME button, and allows the user to:
- play video or audio files from the memory stick
- adjust the date and time
- change the PlayStation Portable's nickname for wireless networking
- check on estimated battery life
- load games or film UMDs
- set the PlayStation Portable into a "link mode" which makes the inserted memory stick available to a PC via USB
The PSP's default background colour changes depending on the month, with each month's colour gradually fading into the next, as shown in the table below:
The background colour intensity on the XMB also changes depending on the time of day, being at full brightness at 12 noon, and fading to black as it becomes close to midnight. After midnight, the intensity begins to brighten again until midday.
Recent firmware updates have also enabled users to choose a specific colour theme manually or specify a background from any stored image on the PlayStation Portable memory stick.
