The controls for the PSP will be familiar to those people who have used a PlayStation controller, with a D-pad to the left of the screen, and an analogue stick, (or nub) underneath it. This nub is a circular disc that slides rather than tilts, and can be removed and replaced with an alternative third party stick.
To the right of the screen are the PlayStation face buttons (triangle, circle, cross, square), which can be used to display, select, confirm and decline functions or navigation choices, depending on the feature being accessed or the game being played.
The unit also features two shoulder buttons (L and R) on the top of the console, and a row of secondary controls along the underside of the screen. These include:
- HOME button (accesses the system's main menu)
- Volume control buttons (adjusts the volume)
- Sound button (adjusts the tone or mutes the sound)
- Display button (adjusts the screen brightness)
- SELECT button (used for navigating menus)
- START button (to start and pause action)
