The DS Lite is an updated version of the Nintendo DS, and features the following changes:
- A more durable, scratch-resistant touch screen.
- 42% less volume than the original Nintendo DS:
- 133.0 mm x 73.9 mm x 21.5 mm (DS Lite)
- 148.7 mm x 84.7 mm x 28.9 mm (Original DS)
- 21% lighter than the original Nintendo DS
- 218 g (DS Lite)
- 275 g (Original DS)
- Larger, easier to hold stylus:
- 87.5 mm x 4.9 mm (DS Lite)
- 75.0 mm x 4.0 mm (Original DS)
- 16% smaller D-pad, reduced to 18.6 mm across. However, the A/B/X/Y buttons have kept the same dimensions.
- The power button has been moved from its position on the original DS directly above the D-pad to the side. This rectifies the problem suffered by some users who accidentally pushed the power button during play.
- The DS Lite includes some styling from the Wii, such as Century Gothic typeface on the buttons and a D-pad with lines.
- The wrist strap has been omitted from consoles in North America, Australia and Europe, whilst in Japan, the wrist strap remains, but no longer includes a thumb stylus.
- The console is capable of receiving Wi-Fi signals from other Nintendo DS Lites, original Nintendo DS systems and Nintendo's Wii console.
- The DS Lite has a new External Extension Connection, which now renders it incompatible to accessories for the Game Boy Advance EXT2 port, such as headphone adapters and power cords.
