Screen Size/Keyboard Size/Pointing Device
You need to be happy with the screen size and you need to be comfortable using the keyboard and pointing device. All three of these things affect the price and weight of your laptop - the bigger the display and keyboard, the higher the weight will be and the larger the size. If possible, try and test a few out, just to get a feel for them and so you know what you are after.
Pointing devices usually come in the form of either a touch pad or a roller ball. Laptops can be fitted with an external mouse, but if you are trying to save space you will need to be happy with the device fitted.
Screen Types
There are two types of display:
- Active matrix (TFT)
- Dual scan (STN)/Passive matrix/High Performance Addressing (HPA)
Active matrix screens are faster, brighter, and cost more than a dual scan/HPA screen, but if for reasons of cost you want a Dual scan screen, HPA screens tend to be brighter than plain dual scan screens.
