Food and Drink

Jamaican food is often fiery, with pungent spices and peppers.

Popular dishes include:

  • Curried goat and rice
  • Patties (pastry filled with spiced ground beef)
  • Pepperpot soup (salt pork, salt beef, okra and kale)
  • Salt fish (dried cod) with ackee (the cooked fruit of the ackee tree)
  • 'Rice and peas' (rice with kidney beans, coconut milk and spring onions)

Jamaican rum is world-renowned, especially Gold Label. Red Stripe beer is excellent, as is Tia Maria (a coffee and chocolate liqueur).
