If you want to get the most out of your laptop, you should try to get at least 512 MB or more of system memory (RAM). This memory runs programs and software, so the more you have, the more your laptop can deal with. Purchase as much as your budget will allow when you buy your laptop as most laptops have only one or two expansion slots and you could wind up having to discard old memory if you come to upgrade.
For simple word processing, you might get away with only having 128 Mb of RAM, but more would be preferable. Try to opt for at least 512 Mb of RAM.
