Good Time to Visit

Weather

The south is hot and dry from November to February, main rainy season is July to October. In the north the rainy season is May to October. (More details can be found in Climate in Cameroon).

Visitors are recommended to bring lightweight cotton clothes along with canvas or light leather shoes or sandals. Waterproofs are advised for coastal areas.

Festivals

A 27 km race up and down a 3000 metre high mountain, the Mt Cameroon Race, is held every January. Tabaski is celebrated in February or March, according to the Muslim calendar, with a parade of wise men and fortune tellers. The Cameroon National Festival, non-religious, is held on 20 May, and is best seen in Maroua. During Nso Cultural Week in mid-November, horses race through the streets of Kumbo. Other festivals follow the religious calendars.

* Although Muslim holidays always fall on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date they are celebrated on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, due to the fact that the Islamic calendar is lunar whilst the Gregorian calendar is solar. Because this lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, Islamic holy days usually shift 11 days earlier each successive solar year. The method used to determine when each Islamic month begins also varies from country to country.
