Do you require a computer keyboard that accommodates the needs of children, or people who are visually impaired, blind or those who suffer from a physical disability? If so, then consider the growing range of specialised keyboards on offer:
Big Keys
These have been specifically created for adults or children who have limited vision. As you may have guessed, the keys are much larger and more brightly coloured then a conventional keyboard.
Silent/Flexible Keyboards
Does the sound of heavy fingers striking keys on the keyboard irritate you? If so, you can get hold of soft touch keys or keyboards made of plastic. These are often flexible and can be folded for ease of travel or tidiness.
Kidboards
Perfect for young children, these keyboards use bright coloured keys to aid the process of learning. They are otherwise identical to a standard keyboard.
Magic Wand Keyboards
Ideal for disabled people with very limited arm/hand movement, these small keyboards have a built in mouse.
Datahand Ergonomic Keyboards
If you suffer from RSI related pain, then this keyboard is another option. It consists of a split keyboard for each hand, of which only a minimum amount of contact is required as the fingers rest inside each key. With five holes for each finger to sit in, directional movement triggers the required keys.
One-Handed Keyboards
Ideal for people who have restricted limb movement and can only use one hand.
Braille Keyboards
These utilise raised dots on the keys and are designed for the blind.
It is possible to order specialised keyboards which combine more than one of these features. Again, it is also possible to use both a specialised type and a standard keyboard (switching between the two) using a dual keyboard adaptor.
