Luanda
The nation's capital has a number of places for the traveller to visit including the National Museum of Anthropology, the Museum of Armed Forces and the Museum of Slavery (25 km along the coast from Luanda). Just 5 minutes from the capital are the Ilha beaches, which are suitable for bathing.
Kissama National Park
The Kissama National Park lies 70 km (45 miles) south of Luanda. Once home to elephant, rhino and buffalo, the long years of war and widespread poaching have meant that only eland, waterbuck, manatee, marine turtles and other small creatures have been sighted recently. However, a wide variety of bird life is still in the park. Accommodation is available in bungalows in the middle of the park. The park is closed during the rainy season.
Mussulo
A bay formed from the sediment of the Kwanza River, with wide, white, sandy beaches covered with coconut palms and home to fishermen living in cuhatas. On the other side of the bay, weekend houses and a tourist complex and watersports centre have now been built. Whiting and grouper are the most commonly found fish.
The Calandula Waterfalls
Located in the Malanje area, these waterfalls provide an impressive spectacle, especially at the end of the rainy season when water levels are at their highest.
Palmeirinhas
A long and deserted beach 45 km (28 miles) south of Luanda. However, although the scenery is magnificent, bathing can be hazardous. It is best enjoyed as a relaxed fishing spot.
