Good Time to Visit

Weather

High Saharan temperatures can be particularly severe during the summer months. In contrast, desert temperatures drop dramatically at night. Rainfall is relatively low. Coastal resorts are cooled by sea breezes. Sandstorms may occur. In general, the best times to visit are March to April, or October to November. (For more information, see Climate in Algeria).

Festivals

Many of the major festivities are influenced by the religious calendar and vary accordingly. Secular events include Independence Day on 5 July and Revolutionary Readjustment on June 19. The hugely challenging Sahara Marathon takes place in the month of February in Tindouf.

Public Holidays

The following table shows the public holidays celebrated in Algeria:

Date Holiday
1 January New Year's Day
1 May Labour Day
5 July Independence Day
19 June Revolutionary Readjustment
1 November Anniversary of the Revolution
Variable* Ashoura
Variable* Eid al-Adha (Feast of the Sacrifice)
Variable* Eid al-Fitr (End of Ramadan)
Variable* Islamic New Year
Variable* Mouloud (Birth of the Prophet)

* Although Muslim holidays always fall on the same day of the Islamic calendar, the date they are celebrated on the Gregorian calendar varies from year to year, due to the fact that the Islamic calendar is lunar whilst the Gregorian calendar is solar. Because this lunar year is about 11 days shorter than the solar year, Islamic holy days usually shift 11 days earlier each successive solar year. The method used to determine when each Islamic month begins also varies from country to country.
