The US launch of the PS3 in November 2006 saw the inclusion of 15 titles, with Resistance: Fall of Man soon becoming the most popular, and winning PlayStation 3 game of the year from several gaming sites. However, several of the planned launch titles were delayed until Spring 2007, including F.E.A.R. and The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion.
Although titles for the console are relatively limited at the moment, there are approximately 200 in the development stage, most to be released in 2007. These include MotorStorm, an off-road racing game, Medal of Honor: Airborne, a first person shooter, Resident Evil 5, a horror action adventure and Warhawk, a third person flying shooter that makes use of the PlayStation 3's tilt sensing capabilities.
Some of the most popular and highly rated games to be released so far include:
- Call of Duty 3 (Historic First-Person Shooter)
- Fight Night Round 3 (Boxing)
- Lemmings (Puzzle game downloadable from the PlayStation store)
- Madden NFL 07 (American Football Sim)
- Marvel: Ultimate Alliance (Action Role-Playing)
- NBA 2K7 (Basketball Sim)
- Need for Speed Carbon (GT/Street Racing)
- NHL 2K7 (Ice Hockey Sim)
- Resistance: Fall of Man (Sci-Fi First-Person Shooter)
- Ridge Racer 7 (Racing)
- Tiger Woods PGA Tour 07 (Golf Sim)
- Tony Hawk's Project 8 (Skateboarding)
Backwards Compatibility
The Sony PLAYSTATION 3 has been designed to be backwards compatible with both PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, although a small number of games that did not adhere to their TRC (Technical Requirements Checklist) may experience problems. Sony has released a memory card adaptor (see Accessories for more details) that enables users to copy their PS/PS2 data to a virtual memory card on the hard drive. The PlayStation 3 can also use Memory Sticks to store save data for PlayStation and PlayStation 2 software.
