The Wii console is not only home to all of Nintendo's flagship franchises, such as Mario, The Legend of Zelda, Pokemon, Animal Crossing and the Super Smash Bros series, but will also offer games from third party publishers including Sega and Electronic Arts. Although the system was originally said to be region-free, it has now been confirmed that the console does support regional lockout.
GameCube Compatibility
The Wii console is backward compatible with all Nintendo GameCube software, which is achieved with the slot-loading drive's ability to accept GameCube discs. The Wii is also backward compatible with most GameCube peripherals, which can be connected via set of four GameCube controller ports and two Memory Card slots concealed by flip-open panels. However, as neither the Classic Controller nor the Wii Remote will function with GameCube games, players must use a GameCube controller. An orginal GameCube memory card is also required to save data, as the Wii internal flash memory will not function with GameCube games.
Wii Games
The Wii was designed to appeal to a much broader audience than other 7th generation consoles, aimed to get all members of the family to join in the fun, whether they are normally game-players or traditional non-gamers. With the Wii's innovative motion sensitive controller, players are able to become more involved in the games: instead of pressing a button to swing a tennis racket, Wii games require the player to actually swing the racket, enabling them to become part of the game.
