Parental Controls for the Wii

The Wii features parental controls settings, which enables parents to manage the content available to console users. When setting up the console, parents can choose the highest game rating that they want to allow, using the native rating systems of the country they live in (for example, PEGI and BBFC in the UK, ESRB in North America and OFLC in Australia and New Zealand). You can find out more about game content ratings here ...

When parental controls have been applied, users are prompted to set a 4-digit PIN which will enable parental controls to be adjusted in the future, and will allow any authorised users to access restricted game content.

In addition to blocking unsuitable game content, users may also place limits on the several online features, requiring the input of the PIN code before they may be accessed:

  • Internet Channel (allow or restrict use of the browser)
  • News Channel
  • Wii Messages (can disable the ability to send and receive messages from other Wii consoles; however, system updates and related business messages from Nintendo will not be affected)
  • Use of Points (can restrict the use of Wii Points to acquire downloads from the Wii Shop Channel)
