Physical Appearance
The Xbox 360 was designed by Astro Studios in cooperation with Hers Experimental Design Laboratory and is similar in form to its predecessor, but slightly thinner in all dimensions. In addition, the new console is white and slightly concave, whilst the original Xbox was black and convex.
The front of the console features a 'ring of light', which displays 4 illuminated quadrants either in green or red. When the lights turn red, the console has encountered a technical problem, with the number of lit sectors informing the user the category of error.
The Xbox 360 is about 350 grams lighter than the original Xbox (now 3.5 kg or 7.7 lb) and uses an estimated 2 W of power when the console is in standby mode.
Configuration Choices
The Xbox 360 is available in 2 different configurations: the Xbox 360 Premium Package and an Xbox 360 Core System, with the Premium Package costing around £80 more than the Core Package.
The table below shows the major differences between the two packages.
In Australia, New Zealand and Mexico, the Media Remote was included as a substitution for the Xbox Live headset in the Xbox 360 Package.
Both configurations include one year warranties; however, consoles purchased in North America before December 21, 2006 were given 90 day warranties, which were later extended to one year.
It has been noted that the initial total cost of components in the Premium Package were more than the package's retail price, meaning that Microsoft lost money with every sale. This has become the norm in the console games industry, as console makers expect to make up the loss through game licensing. However, streamlined processes and abundant component supplies have meant that the total cost of components has now fallen somewhat.
