A joystick is a control device consisting of a handheld stick that pivots about one end and transmits its angle in two or three dimensions to a computer or home video game console. The majority of joysticks are two-dimensional, having two axes of movement (similar to a mouse), configured so that moving the stick back (down) or forward (up) signals movement along the Y axis, and moving it right or left signals movement along the X axis. Some joysticks are three-dimensional, whereby twisting the stick right (clockwise) or left (anti-clockwise) signals movement along the Z axis.
Joysticks are often used to control games, particularly flight simulators and usually feature one or more push-buttons for firing or other actions.
