Optical Media

In the mid-1990s, external media used for video games shifted from cartridges to optical media, specifically CD-ROM. Although at that time discs were slower than cartridges, they had a larger capacity and were significantly cheaper to manufacture. By the early 21st century, all of the major home consoles used optical media, although a further shift has taken place from CD-ROM to DVD-ROM, which has a much higher storage capacity. The PlayStation 3 system has taken this development even further, using even higher-capacity, but more expensive, Blu-Ray optical discs.
