Over the years, home video game consoles have used a variety of external media to distribute games, ranging from magnetic media, cards and cartridges in the early systems, to optical media such as CD-ROMS, DVDs and Blu-Ray discs in the late 90s and 2000s. The latest seventh generation consoles such as the Playstation 3 and GameBox 360 also distribute software over the Internet direct to the console.
