Criticisms of Video Games

Like many other forms of media, computer and video games have often been the subject of censorship and controversy, due to the depiction of graphic violence, consumption of alcohol, tobacco or drugs, sexual themes, profanity or advertising. Critics include religious groups, politicians, parents' groups and other special interest groups and opinion is widely debated in the press and other media.

This type of criticism and controversy is not unique to video games and has also been levelled at other forms of entertainment at one time or other, including films, books and music. However, video games do differ from other types of media in the fact that they offer players an increasingly wide range of possible activities, with elements that may not necessarily be experienced by every player. Whilst proponents praise this element of choice as a tool to make the game experience more real and engaging, critics see it as allowing players to 'act out' antisocial fantasies.

Groups critical of video games have been at the forefront of game legislation and censorship; itself a controversial subject and a popular topic of debate. Censorship involves the restriction of the playing, distribution, purchase or sale of video games and proponents and opponents are often very passionate about their individual views.
