The Nintendo Game Boy Advance (GBA) is a handheld video game console released in Japan on 21 March 2001 as the successor to the highly popular Game Boy Color, and then in North America and Europe in June of that year. The console is backwards compatible with both Game Boy and Game Boy Color games, and it may be linked to other devices via use of a Nintendo Game Link cable or GameCube cable.
The handheld device was immediately successful, with minimal competition from other devices such as the Sega Nomad. By the end of 2006, the console had sold over 77 million units (40 million of those the updated version, the Game Boy Advance SP), and sales remain strong even after the introduction of the Nintendo DS, with 850,000 units sold in December 2006 alone.
