In late 1998, the Japanese company SNK released the Neo Geo Pocket within Hong Kong and Japan. Although the company had been involved in developing software for both arcade games and home video consoles since 1979, this was their first hand held video game system.
However, the console and its monochrome screen did not sell particularly well and the unit was discontinued in 1999 to make way for its successor the Neo Geo Pocket Colour. Despite its relatively short life, there were a number of notable games released for the console, including King of Fighters R-1 and Samurai Showdown. In addition, the unit was forward compatible with the new colour console, meaning that it was able to play the majority of the newly released games. However, there were one or two exceptions to this, including SNK vs. Capcom: Match of the Millennium and Sonic the Hedgehog Pocket Adventure.
