In 1996, Nintendo released the Game Boy Pocket; a smaller, lighter unit that required fewer batteries than the original Game Boy, using 2 AAA batteries (rather than the original version's 4 AA batteries), to give it approximately 10 hours of game play. The screen colours were changed from a monochromatic display that featured 4 shades ranging from green to black, to a true black-and-white display.
The console had a smaller link port, which required an adaptor in order to link with the original Game Boy. The smaller design was then used on all subsequent Game Boy models other than the Game Boy Micro.
Although the first version, which was silver in colour, did not have an LED to show battery levels, this was soon added to subsequent units, along with a choice of different colours, including a limited-edition metallic Ice Blue version.
