Generation NEX is a Nintendo Entertainment System (NES) hardware clone developed by US company Messiah Entertainment, Inc. The machine, which was first released in 2005, is designed to play most games released for the NES or the Famicom (the Japanese equivalent), taking both the NES 72-pin cartridges and the Famicom 60-pin cartridges used by Nintendo. However, the system is incompatible with a few titles, including Bandit Kings of Ancient China (gives a black screen), Castlevania III: Dracula's Curse (green screen) and WWF King of the Ring (major graphical errors). Other games, such as The Incredible Crash Dummies, may give some graphical errors, but remain playable.
Generation NEX is compatible with all the original NES accessories including the Power Pad, Zapper light gun, and Four Score player adapter, and has built-in support for Messiah brand 2.4GHz Wireless NES Controllers. However, due to the system's lack of a Famicom expansion port, the unit is incompatible with all Famicom peripherials apart from the Famicom Disk System, which uses the cartridge port as a connector.
This system has pseudo-stereo sound capability which can be programmed into future games. As the NES only supported mono sound, currently available NES games will still play in dual mono.
There are claims by some people that the colour and sound reproductions are inaccurate on the NEX, whilst others say the console is faithful to the original Nintendo Entertainment System. It is also thought that the NEX system incorrectly wires the cartridge port in a way that could potentially damage NES carts, as well as the system itself. However, there have been no reports of cartridges being damaged by the Generation NEX.
The Generation NEX console is not licensed, endorsed or supported by Nintendo.
