The GP2X is an open-source, Linux-based handheld video game console and media player released on 10 November 2005 by GamePark Holdings of South Korea. The device is designed to view photos, play games, video and music, and its open architecture enables owners to develop and run their own software. Additional features, such as new media format support may be added in the future using the systems upgradeable firmware. The GP2X has become popular for running emulators, which allows owners to use software from another system on the device.
The GP2X came about after the company that original created the 2001 handheld console, the GP32, split into two: GamePark Holdings, who created this 2D-based gaming device, and GamePark, who went on to develop the XGP and GPKiDS systems. Within a year of its release, the GP2X had sold 30,000 units, with sales expected to double over the following few months.
