The Atari Flashback was a dedicated video game console pre-programmed with classic Atari 2600 and Atari 7800 console games from the 70s and 80s. released in 2004, the system came with a pair of joystick controllers and connected directly to the television using standard composite video and monaural audio RCA plugs.
The Flashback was designed to play 5 Atari 7800 game classics:
- Asteroids
- Centipede
- Desert Falcon
- Charley Chuck's Food Fight
- Planet Smashers
and 15 Atari 2600 game classics:
- Adventure
- Air-Sea Battle
- Battlezone
- Breakout
- Canyon Bomber
- Crystal Castles
- Gravitar
- Haunted House
- Millipede
- Saboteur
- Sky Diver
- Solaris
- Sprintmaster
- Warlords
- Yars' Revenge
This list included Saboteur, which had not been previously released.
As the machine contained built-in games, no carts or other gaming media were required, making it a simple 'Plug and Play' experience. However, the product was based on NOAC (NES-On-A-Chip) hardware, which did not resemble either of the Atari systems that the Flashback was designed to represent. As a result, the games it contained were ports and differed in varying degrees from the original games, and some felt that Flashback failed to capture the feel and gameplay of the original systems.
