The Dreamcast was the successor to the Sega Saturn and was Sega's fifth and final video game console. The Dreamcast was launched in Japan in November 1998, and then in North America on 9 September 1999 and in Europe the month after. This launch took place sixteen months before the PlayStation 2 and three years before the Microsoft Xbox and the Nintendo GameCube, and the console was considered to be well ahead of its time.
However, the Dreamcast never managed to gather enough sales momentum before the release of the highly popular PlayStation 2 in March 2000, and after selling 10.6 million units, Sega decided to discontinue the Dreamcast in 2001, withdrawing entirely from the console hardware business to concentrate on software releases.
In this section, you'll find a guide to the models, accessories, technology and detailed specifications of the console, in addition to a look at the all important games.
