In December 2003, Sony released a feature rich multimedia device in Japan called the PSX. This device combined the video game console of the PlayStation 2 with its additional DVD and CD playing capabilities, together with a digital video recorder (DVR) and DVD burner.
The two processors that power the PS2 (the Graphics Synthesizer and the EmotionEngine) have been combined onto one chipset called 90nm EE+GS using nanotechnology. In addition to the standard features offered by the PlayStation 2, this new chipset allows for additional capabilities such as the ability to:
- receive analogue television broadcasts to a built in TV tuner
- record DVDs
- record television broadcasts
- use broadband connectivity
- display digital photos from a Sony memory stick
- play music MP3s using a memory stick
The powerful user interface enables users to perform simultaneous actions, such as playing a game whilst recording a TV programme, and uses a firmware update system to add even more features to the PSX. Two versions were released in Japan: one with 160GB hard drive (PSX DESR-5000), and one with 250GB hard drive (PSX DESR-7000). However, sales have been poor in spite of major price drops, and North American and European launches are thought to be unlikely.
