In July 2000, Sony released the PSone (also known as the PS1), a smaller and redesigned version of the PlayStation video game console. The unit measures 38mm x 193 mm x 144 mm (one-third smaller than the original PlayStation), and consumers can also purchase a small LCD screen and an adaptor to power the unit for use in cars. The PSone is fully compatible with all PlayStation software, and also plays audio CDs.
The PSone was hugely successful, outselling all other consoles (including Sony's own brand-new PlayStation 2) during 2000, and is still in production today.
