The fifth generation of video game consoles featured both 32-bit and 64-bit consoles, and began with the release of the 3DO in October of 1993. However the market during this time was dominated by three consoles: the Sony PlayStation (1994), Sega Saturn (1994) and the Nintendo 64 (1996), with the PlayStation eventually triumphing over all three systems and ending Nintendo's longstanding domination over the market. The Atari Jaguar and Commodore Amiga CD32 were also part of this era, but their sales were poor and they failed to make a significant impact on the market.
In this section, we take a look at the home video game consoles released in this period, including those released only for the Japanese market, such as the Casio Loopy, FM Towns Marty, Playdia and the PC-FX.
