Motherboards

The motherboard is the main circuit board inside the PC and holds the processor, memory and any expansion slots. Connecting directly or indirectly to every part of the PC, the motherboard is where everything is connected together, including network, sound and graphics cards. It also provides connectors on the back of the PC for USB appliances, a mouse and your keyboard.

When buying a motherboard, ensure that it has enough internal slots for everything you need, making sure that there are enough memory and PCI slots for your internal hardware. Make certain you have enough USB ports for your peripherals, otherwise you will need an additional USB hub or PCI USB. Many modern motherboards also come with a built in firewire port which is very useful for fast digital video and audio transfer.

Also ensure that the AGP port supports the graphics card you wish to use. AGP ports currently run at up to 8x.
