The PlayStation 3 (trademarked PLAYSTATION 3 and abbreviated PS3) is Sony's third video game console, and the successor to the PlayStation 2. Released in Japan on 11 November 2006 and in North America on the 17 November, the PS3 competes primarily against the other major 7th generation consoles: Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Nintendo's Wii. The unit sold extremely well at launch, with over a million units shipped to both Japan and North America within a month of release. However, due to a shortage of laser diodes used in the unit's Blu-ray Disc drive, the launch of the PAL console has been delayed until March 2007.
The PLAYSTATION 3 is capable of HD video output at resolutions of up to 1080p and is the only current console to come with a built-in next-generation optical drive (Blu-ray). The unit is backwards compatible with most PlayStation and PlayStation 2 games, and can also play DVDs and CDs.
