Seventh Generation of Video Consoles

The seventh generation of video consoles began in 2005 with the release of Microsoft's Xbox 360. The console sold out completely at release and by the end of 2006 had sold 10.4 million worldwide. However, due to a lack of role playing games (RPGs), the system has struggled somewhat in Japan, although sales have increased in the region recently due to the release of the highly anticipated game Blue Dragon.

Nintendo released its 7th generation console, the Wii at the end of 2006, selling more than 1.5 million units within the first two months. A distinguishing feature of the console is its wireless controller, the Wii Remote, which can be used as a handheld pointing device and can detect rotation and motion in three dimensions. It also includes an internal feature known as WiiConnect24, which enables it to receive updates and messages over the Internet while consuming very little electrical power.

Sony's Playstation 3 was released in North America and Japan in November 2006, and in Europe in March 2007. Shortages of the units were reported to have caused chaos, with customers fighting over units and a number of people robbed at gunpoint for the consoles. Although the Playstation 3 is set at a comparatively higher price than its competitors, it is thought that its loyal fanbase and its high number of titles on offer may help to overcome this.
