Although most video and computer games may simply be played 'out of the box', there are a number of peripherals and other devices that can enhance the player's enjoyment of the game. These include a wide array of game controllers, such as light guns, joysticks and steering wheels, along with modifications (or mods) that can change the gameplay or content of a game. The games themselves may also be found on a range of media, with cartridges popular in the 80s and 90s, superseded by optical media such as DVD-ROMs in the late 90s.
The enjoyment of a game can also depend greatly on the type of system used to play it, with gamers able to choose from home PCs, video game consoles and handheld consoles. Of course, if you're a dedicated gamer, you might just have all three!
