Koninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. (Royal Philips Electronics N.V.), more commonly known as Philips, is one of the largest electronics companies in the world. In addition to developing products such as the cassette tape, the laserdisc player, the Video 2000-system and the Compact Disc, Philips also introduced the CD-i in 1991, a Compact Disc Interactive system that included many video-game console-type features.
However, the release of cheaper and more powerful CD games consoles, such as the Sony PlayStation and a lack of consumer interest in CD-i titles resulted in the decision by Philips to drop the system in 1998, after selling just over half a million units.
