SNK Playmore (formerly SNK) is a Japanese video game hardware and software company, founded in Osaka, Japan, in July 1978 by Eikichi Kawasaki. The company is most notable for creating the Neo-Geo arcade system and the Neo Geo range of handheld consoles.
In 1990, SNK released a home version of their arcade game units, a single cartridge unit called the NeoGeo Advanced Entertainment System. The NeoGeo AES was an incredibly powerful machine compared to other consoles of the day, running twice as fast and with specialised audio and video chipsets. However, these high specs came with a high price tag, with the console costing $600 and each game costing $200. The company also produced a Neo Geo CD and CDZ, a failed, 64-bit Neo-Geo 64 system and two handheld systems, the Neo Geo Pocket (1998) and the Neo Geo Pocket Colour (1999).
However, the company collapsed in October 22, 2001 and soon filed for bankruptcy.
