The NEC Corporation is a multi-national information technologies company headquartered in Minato-ku, Tokyo, Japan and founded in 1899. NEC provides information technology (IT) and network solutions to business enterprises, communications services providers and government.
During the late 80s and early 90s, NEC released two video gaming consoles; the 8-bit PC Engine in 1987 (released in North America and Europe in 1989 under the name TurboGrafx-16) and its 32-bit successor, the PC-FX, in 1994. However, due to problems such as the lack of third-party software support, the two consoles were driven out of the market, first by the Sega Mega Drive and Super Nintendo, and then later by the Sega Saturn and Sony PlayStation.
