RAM (or Random Access Memory) is basically the heart of your computer. Programs when running are making use of the memory you have, since RAM can be accessed and changed much faster than data on a hard drive. So in theory, the more memory you have, the faster applications will run. Your Operating System and CPU dictate how effectively and how much RAM is used and controlled.
If running a high specification PC with Windows XP as an operating system, a minimum of 256Mb of RAM is needed, whilst at least 512Mb of RAM is recommended to get the best performance out of your computer.
DDR RAM
Double Data Rate SDRAM is simply a superior form of SDRAM which can reach speeds far in excess of standard SDRAM.
DRD RAM
Direct Rambus DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) is heralded as the future of computer memory, being capable of speeds far in excess of standard RAM. It also features hardware that organises its memory use much better, moving data between the memory and a cache more efficiently.
