Located on the cool, coastal outskirts of Cape Town, this is South Africa's most historically famous wine region. This is mainly due to its almost legendary dessert wines, which are said to have given solace to the emperor Napoleon in exile. The wines were originally produced at the Constantia Estate just outside Cape Town, from the Muscat Blanc a Petits Grains grape.
In 1986 the fine Klein (Little) Constantia estate revived this style with a Muscat-based sweet wine, known as Vin de Constance. It has a lively texture, with layers of orange peel, crème brûlée, maple, and green tea flavours.
There are just four other estates in this area, all of them good: Groot Constantia, Buitervenwachting, Constantia Uitsig and Steenberg.
