This is a large region to the north of Cape Town, mostly given over to wheat farming. Old, low yielding bush vines are the secret of Swartland's success, thriving in the dry land vineyards, cooled by the sea breezes from the nearby Atlantic Ocean.
Viticulture in the Swartland is still comparatively young, but it is grown under dryland conditions, without or with minimal irrigation. As a result, the wines from the Swartland are of an extraordinary quality and very much in demand.
