USA

The United States is the birthplace of the modern wine revolution. This has given the world clean, fresh, fruity-flavoured wine at affordable prices. It all began in California, where the warm, dry climate is worlds away from that of the classic European regions.

American wine is produced in many other states, foremost among them, Washington, Oregon and New York State.

In the West, Idaho has had some success with Riesling and Chardonnay, and Texas is producing some fruity Cabernet Sauvignon and attractive ripe Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc. Over towards the East Coast, Pennsylvania, Maryland and Virginia make some good wines from Riesling, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon.

However, it is California that leads the US in terms of both quality and quantity.
